Life Evolving

Over the past 3 years, my life has been evolving.  It started with back pain – no injury, just increasing pain.  I went to several doctors – back specialists, chiropractors & physical therapist. Essentially I had arthritis.  The back specialist wanted to fry my nerves so I wouldn’t feel the pain.  One of the chiropractors told me it wouldn’t really get any better & I wouldn’t be able to lift more than 30 lbs.  Neither of these options worked for me, but I didn’t know what else I could do.  Enter Facebook… my cousin happened to post something about how she was eating and exercising and how it had improved her life.  She used the word ‘Paleo’ – so I started doing some research – is this something that could help me?

I found a book – It Starts with Food by Dallas and Melissa Hartwig – and began to read.  Based on their book I thought maybe this idea of clean eating could help me.  I remembered a Chiropractor I used to go to – Corey Sondrup – promoted this same idea, but I thought he was nuts – give up milk & grains?  How could someone live that way?  Now here it was 8 years later & I’m reading that these things could be causing inflammation which could in turn be causing my back pain – hmmmm.  So I decided to start on this journey to clean eating – eliminating sugar. processed foods, grains & dairy.

In addition to eating clean, I also went back to my old Chiropractor – Dr. Sondrup, and found an Active Release Techniques practitioner to work on my back & hips.  While I haven’t done the clean eating perfectly, I have seen lots of great results – including almost eliminating my back pain, decrease of seasonal allergy symptoms, and weight loss.  Lift only 30 lbs – I don’t think so – I’m deadlifting over 100!  Most importantly – I can play with my kids again!!

In addition to clean eating – I’ve found other areas of life that I’ve also been focusing on.  This journey started by listening to podcasts.  I came across Sarah Fragoso and Jason Seib and their Jassa Podcast – they don’t just promote clean eating, but also things like getting enough sleep, reducing stress, meditating, and not over-exercising.  I’ve really enjoyed following these ideas – simplifying life in general.  I’ve found myself more energized (sleeping more & better fuel for my body), better able to deal with stress throughout the day (meditation – better sleep) and stronger (better fuel for my body & weight lifting).

I’m so thankful I’ve been able to find options besides frying my nerves or just living with the pain.  If you’re interested in clean eating – I recommend It Starts with Food (mentioned above),  The JASSA Method (Jason Seib & Sarah Fragoso),  The Paleo Coach (Jason Seib), and any of Sarah Fragoso’s cookbooks (they’re all awesome!).  Or find them on Facebook along with Dr. Sondrup (Dr. Corey Sondrup/Optimal Health Dynamics).
